The family business ED. WÜSTHOF DREIZACKWERK KG has been a success story right from the start. It is practically the only medium-sized business of its kind to have shaped the cutlery industry to such an extent and to have developed from a small handicraft business into a successful and international company. Today, WÜSTHOF has become one of the leading manufacturers of quality goods in Germany. As a knife specialist, the company, which was founded in 1814, sells an extensive range of cutting instruments. The current range covers more than 350 different types of forged knives bearing the "Made in Germany/Solingen" hallmark. The start of our 200th anniversary year will be marked by the "Ambiente 2014" international consumer goods trade fair, where we will be introducing our anniversary activities to the specialist trade.

It all began as a quiet affair when Johan Wilhelm Wüsthof founded the company Ed. Wüsthof in Solingen in 1814. In the beginning, the focus was on the production of scissors and the steel and iron goods trade. Good business sense and an intuitive vision spanning subsequent generations led over time to the company becoming a major knife manufacturer. Today, in one of the most state-of-the-art production facilities in the world, it takes over 40 steps to produce around two million forged knives featuring the famous trident logo at the company headquarters in Solingen. This distinctive logo was registered as a trademark back in 1895 at the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin and has appeared on all WÜSTHOF products ever since. As a symbol of design and exclusivity, it is legally protected in almost all countries worldwide.

In the middle of the 1980s, the Managing Director at the time, Wolfgang Wüsthof, realised the importance of having efficient manufacturing processes to allow the cost-intensive site in Germany to be maintained. The many varieties of knives available today achieve the highest standards of perfection and consistent quality througha combination of industrial automation and manual skill. The latest technical innovations, such as the unique PEtec (Precision Edge Technology) process and the systematic expansion of the range, reflect the high innovative power of the traditional company. Whether in Europe, the USA, Asia or Japan, the WÜSTHOF brand enjoys a top reputation amongst amateur and professional chefs worldwide. Thanks to its own sales companies in the USA and Canada and long-standing partnerships with high-performance distributors, exports have increased by over 80%. Today, WÜSTHOF knives are available in more than 90 countries, with the USA being the largest export market.

ED. WÜSTHOF DREIZACKWERK KG employs around 400 people worldwide, most of whom work at the production site in Solingen. The traditional company is managed by the seventh generation of the family, Harald Wüsthof. "The wide variety of activities we have planned for our anniversary year will express our close ties with the city, our employees and the specialist trade," said Harald Wüsthof. "Let me reveal at this point that our limited-edition anniversary set will unite the traditional with the modern and will take the world of knives by surprise," the Managing Director let on.
